Driver, assistant arrested in Thekkady boat tragedy
The driver of the boat that capsized last week in the lake in Kerala killing 45 people has been arrested along with his assistant, police said on Monday.

K K Anil Kumar, a melshanti with a temple in Cherthala, filed the defamation case. In his complaint, Kumar had alleged that the report published on December 24, 2004 in the daily-Desabhimani contained defamatory statements against him.
Desabhimani is the mouth peace of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Kerala unit and Achuthnandan, was the editor in chief of the paper in 2004. The judicial magistrate also issued arrest warrants against CPI (M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and the party''s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha P Karunakaran, who were printer and publisher and general manager of the daily respectively. The court expressed unhappiness over respondents repeated failure to appear before court even after summons were issued to them many times.

A bunch of about 200 critically endangered plants have been found by a group of botanists at Kalassamala in the district.
The plants -- Syzygium travencorium Gamble, known as 'Kulavetti' locally -- belong to the Myrtakae family and were found by the botanists of the Sri Krishna College, Guruvayur recently.
