The government has issued orders for release of four prisoners, including former Inspector-General (IG) of Police K. Lakshmana, serving life term after being found guilty in the Naxalite Verghese killing case. The release order has been issued on the basis of a letter from the Director-General of Police (Jails) under the provisions of the Kerala Prisons Rules 1958 according to which persons aged above 75 years and were in poor health could be released, an official press note said here on Thursday Here is the timeline of events The Naxalite leader A. Verghese was killed in a fake encounter in 1970 in the Thirunelli forest in Wayanad. The former police constable, P. Ramachandran Nair, came out with an astonishing revelation in 1998 that he had shot Verghese dead on the orders of the then Superintendent of Police, Mr. Vijayan, and the then Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr. Lakshmana. The CBI took over the investigation on a directive from the High Court in 1999 Ramachandran Nair died in November 2006. R Lakshmana, sentenced for life in 2010 Former IG Lakshmana released in 2013.
