Karunakaran back in Congress

New Delhi, Dec 30: Senior Kerala politician K Karunakaran on Sunday returned to the Congress, two-and-half years after he parted ways with it in the wake of rampant infighting in the state unit.

The former Kerala Chief Minister was re-inducted into the party after he held separate meetings with Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here.

"Karunakaran is back in the Congress. There was unanimity in the party over his return," said AICC General Secretary Mohsina Kidwai, who was present during the meeting Karunakaran had with Gandhi.

She said Karunakaran has himself said that he will work towards strengthening the organisation.

Karunakaran along with his son K Muraleedharan parted ways with the Congress three years ago and floated the democratic Indira Congress, which later merged with the NCP.

His return to the Congress fold, however, is opposed by his son who said that he would remain as NCP state president and would not associate himself with his father's political line.
